Awareness of the need for organ donation is vital. Many do not think about
this concept and for that reason give no conscious effort to making an informed
decision. While some may be aware of the act of donating organs and tissue,
they have a sense that this is a negative process and disrupts the sanctity of
the human body. This need for inviolability is often a concern. Some may feel
that because of certain experiences with disease, illness, or drug usage they are not good candidates for organ donation. A religious context may yet
prevent others from considering donation.
Here are some general reminders. Virtually all major religions accept the
individual or family decision to donate organs. Some even advocate doing
so. Very few actually take a stance against this decision. Medical
procurement professionals make decisions as to what organs are viable for
transplantation. Even if full consent is given by an individual and
his/her family, only useful organs will be procured. Ask yourself this
question: What if you or a loved one needed a transplant in order to live,
and one was available? Would you say no?
LOL continues to try to bring an awareness to organ donation. This Web site is
an important part of that approach. Articles have been written about Lyric’s
organ donation and promoting her LOL benefit events. A Public Service
Announcement featuring video of Lyric and narrated by her friend Chelsea Lagos
is online. Billboards have been featured throughout the Kansas City metro area
prior to LOL benefits. Please help perpetuate this awareness, which leads to
education and subsequently informed decisions. |
